Guides

Little or no boating experience:
AzRA does not have entry level guiding positions.

To get your foot in the Grand Canyon rafting door, you may want to:

  • Begin with a white water rafting course.
  • Break into guiding on shorter trips and/or lower class rivers.
  • Guide 6 trips piloting a craft through the Grand Canyon without passengers (you’ll need this experience before the Park Service and AzRA allows you to carry passengers).
  • Contact us again once you have more experience.

A lot of experience on other rivers:
The National Park Service requires that new Grand Canyon guides pilot the Grand Canyon 6 times (or 3 times plus the equivalent on comparable rivers) prior to guiding commercial passengers.  We often use a stricter filter.  However, five times per year we run trips with support boats; we will keep your resume on file for one year in the event of last minute cancellations by our guides on these trips.  In addition, we run training trips every few years and will invite folks like you on our training trips if our current guides do not fill a trip. Finally, you can contact OARs, Outdoors Unlimited, Canyon Explorations/Expeditions, and other companies that send baggage boats on their Grand Canyon trips.

Qualified to guide in Grand Canyon:
The best way to get your foot in the door with us is to pick up a trip if one of our scheduled guides cancels.  We will put your name on the call down list for cancellations and keep your resume on file for one year.  Please provide your availability for cancellations when sending your resume and cover letter. You will be contacted in the event that our current guides do not fill a training trip.  Click here to submit a river resume for us to keep on file.
