February is Black History Month! Two hotels in Gr February is Black History Month! Two hotels in Grand Canyon National Park were listed in the Green Book. Read the article to find out which ones and what the "Green Book" is. Having safe spaces for lodging and travel was incredibly important for visiting National Parks for Black people. As of 2018, Black Americans made up only 2% of total national park visitors. While numbers are increasing, there is still much work to be done to increase visitation levels amongst Black Americans. Iconic and legendary river guide Robert (Bob) Melv Iconic and legendary river guide Robert (Bob) Melville, who worked in Grand Canyon for ARTA and AzRA in the 1970s into the 1990s, passed away quietly on January 30th, 2023. Bob was a warm and inclusive person and was an expert at getting folks involved in the fun of a river trip. He was also hilarious, one of the quickest around with a quip or pun. His big rectangle black Army surplus dry bag full of costumes/outfits would usually appear a few nights into a trip. Probably the first guide at AzRA/ARTA to bring dress-up clothes for everyone. He never missed a Lava rapids day in his official Captain's suit!

Bob was born in Fort Bragg, CA, on Oct 11, 1945. A cross-country star in high school and worked at Claire Tappan Lodge in the Sierras for several seasons. He was also a river guide in Oregon and California. Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident around 1999(?) and spent much of his time in care facilities after that unfortunate event. His sense of humor still shone, though!

From his sister Jane, "There are literally hundreds of incredible Melville stories, and how many of them are true is equally incredible. He was a white water river guide by profession and helped so many people have some of the most amazing experiences of their lives. He was a character, an adventurer, an educator, an Uncle (to Chad Melville, Kim Pike, Joanna Ames and Logan Melville), a brother to Chuck, Bill and me, brother-in-law to Marilyn Melville-Irvine and Coni Belli and Ken Ames. He meant so much to many people. There will be no service, but Facebook is a great place to share memories, stories and pictures. If you are an old friend, please share what you would like. And please let other old friends know." For most, I bet thinking about Bob will bring smiles to their hearts and stories to their lips. He was quite a man. A very good man.

My life’s work is the care for, and protection of, our nation’s wealth, it’s natural resources. I am so very impressed by your company’s, and your guide’s diligent care and stewardship for the long term health of the Grand Canyon ecosystem and river corridor. Indeed, I feel very good about booking with your company and am confident that the future of this precious place is in great hands as long as your company and personnel are caring for it and working within it.

Wow-our river guides were amazing. Very personable, and clearly focused on our group safety at all times. I appreciated that two of them were women as well...great role models for the teenage girls in our trip! I know they were stressed about the uncertainty of the COVID world, but I think they adapted to new protocols well, and as a result, our trip was an awesome experience, and a relief from the stress of the current world.

I couldn't have asked for a better time. Ever. This was 14 days of pure joy and adventure. It went by so fast, too. I wish it never ended. There were so many highlights from the river, guides, stories, Little Colorado River being so blue, the stars at night so bright, the moon at night, the critters, the hikes were AMAZING, the waterfalls, the other customers, the food, the good times at night in camp eating and telling stories and having fun. I could go on and on

IIn a life of far more than my fair share of amazing travel experiences ( I spend more than half of my time traveling the globe) I have NEVER had a better trip or one with better people. I do not use this choice of words lightly.
