Meet Tyler Jameson
We introduce you to one of AzRA’s Advisory Committee members, Tyler! She started serving on our AC last year (which is a 3-year term), which means she’s a part of a group of elected guides that represent all of the AzRA guide staff to work together with the management team. She’s been incredibly valuable to that team, and she is much beloved on our river trips! She has a wonderful and beautiful presence about her. She has a joy for life that is infectious. Learn more about her below!
Where were you born and tell us a little about yourself?
I was born and raised in Durango, Colorado. I love dogs, water coloring, the moon, and I graduated from CU Boulder with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology, and almost a minor in women and gender studies. 🙂
What’s your history with AzRA and when did you start guiding?
I started guiding right out of college, and I grew up doing river trips with my family. My dad was a guide for Holiday River Expeditions for over 10 years, so both my sister and I started guiding for Holiday in our early 20s. I guided in the upper basin running all those multi-day trips full-time for 8 years. I started part-time guiding for AzRA in the Grand in 2018. I am now full-time with AzRA and part-time in the upper basin!
What types of trips do you guide?
I row boats and that’s about it! Motors are a mystery to me.
What are your favorite rapids and why?
I love Upset, Granite, Sockdolager, 25 mile, and Redneck rapids! Fun, splashy hits and some chaos!
What are your favorite hikes and why?
Thunder River because you get to see so much change in the environment as you go, and it’s one we don’t do every trip.
What do you do when not guiding at AzRA?
I have gotten to travel around quite a bit to places like Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Australia! And I have gotten to work a handful of odd jobs.
Do you have hobbies, or things you like to do?
I love to mountain bike; it’s one thing I try to do when I travel around! I have been water coloring more and more, and trying to pick up ceramics.
What do you love about the Canyon and guiding?
It’s tough to sum up in a small blurb, but I love that you can lap a place, and it can always surprise you. I love the community building that happens on these trips. Something that we could all do more of outside of the Canyon.
